Guyana launches plan to improve breast cancer diagnosis and treatment

The government has launched a national action plan to strengthen breast cancer care through improved screening, earlier diagnosis, expanded treatment services and closer coordination among healthcare providers.

The Action Plan for Breast Cancer Management was unveiled on Monday at the Ministry of Health’s Brickdam office, bringing together medical specialists, policymakers, cancer advocates and other stakeholders.

Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, emphasised that strengthening screening, diagnosis and treatment services is critical to improving the country’s response to breast cancer.

The plan aims to improve coordination across radiology, pathology, surgery, oncology, and primary healthcare. It will help patients move more smoothly from initial assessment to treatment and follow-up care.

It also prioritises stronger referral pathways and patient navigation systems to help women access services and receive guidance throughout their care.

The minister said these measures are intended to reduce delays and ensure patients receive appropriate medical support at each stage.

In addition, the action plan is being implemented alongside government’s strategic investment in healthcare infrastructure, diagnostic technology, medical equipment, specialised services and workforce development.

Public education and community participation will also form part of the response as the minister urges women to remain informed about their breast health, seek medical attention promptly if they notice potential warning signs, and use available screening and diagnostic services.

The National Breast Cancer Steering Committee, Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, healthcare professionals, non-governmental organisations and cancer advocates contributed to developing the plan.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has expanded diagnostic and oncology services across Guyana to strengthen breast cancer awareness and early detection.

In addition to GPHC, mammography services are now available at the Suddie, Linden, New Amsterdam and Lethem regional hospitals, allowing women to access diagnostic imaging closer to home.

A new pathology laboratory at GPHC enables the identification of specific types of breast cancer, helping healthcare professionals develop more targeted treatment plans.

Specialised oncology services have also been expanded, with an upgraded clinic at GPHC and a new oncology clinic at New Amsterdam Hospital.
