Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Honourable Priya Manickchand, yesterday visited Thomas Street Avenue alongside representatives of the King’s Foundation to assess ongoing works on the first project being undertaken under President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s Healthy Streets Initiative.

Minister Manickchand was joined by Mr. Leslie Ohomele and Mr. Samuel Delvin of the King’s Foundation; Permanent Secretary Miguel Choo-Kang; Deputy Permanent Secretary Godfrey Munroe; Office of the President Project Coordinator Lucina Singh; Chief Engineer Raul Boyer; and other engineers and project staff.

The Thomas Street project, which extends from Lamaha Street to Church Street, was designed by the King’s Foundation in collaboration with the Government of Guyana and forms part of wider efforts to improve Georgetown’s public spaces through healthier, greener, safer and more functional urban design.

During the visit, the team examined the works completed to date and discussed the continued implementation of the project. Minister Manickchand expressed satisfaction with the progress being made as the transformation of the avenue advances.

The Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, remains committed to supporting the transformation of Georgetown through sustainable, people-centred interventions that improve the functionality, appearance and quality of the city’s public spaces.
